What to remember

1

Every group goes through stages: forming, storming, norming, performing.

2

Some people talk a lot, others are quiet. Balance both.

3

The facilitator sets the tone for the group.

When a group comes together, they go through stages. First they are polite and careful (forming). Then there may be disagreements (storming). After that the group finds its rhythm (norming) and works well together (performing). As a facilitator, you need to recognise which stage the group is in. Some people dominate discussions, others stay quiet. Your job is to create balance — invite quiet people to share and gently manage those who talk too much.
